A variation on the old saying "Spare the rod, spoil the child" provides the gag in this Kirk Stiles
husband/wife scene: "Every time I spare the rod, you start spoiling for it!" In other words,
some women need regular maintenance spankings to remind them to behave, as true today as it
was in the late 1950's when we believe Stiles drew this one. The version seen here is from the
June 1967 issue of Laugh Digest that Mike collected when it first hit the stands.
Stiles' angles aren't quite as sharp here as they were in some of his other cartoons - he varied his style
perhaps more than any other of the Humorama Big Five (Ward, Wenzel, DeCarlo, and Homer) - but his OTK
positioning is very good, and his problem with the spankee having bulging thighs is less noticeable here,
perhaps because he defines her buttocks fairly well. The spankee's arm is being pinned behind her back
to indicate her struggles, something that seldom occurs in these Humorama cartoons. Stiles seemed
generally more focused on the bosom than the
behind, often endowing his females with generous proportions but very seldom going completely overboard
as Bill Ward did almost from the beginning in his non-comics work. Stiles also sometimes has
the woman's bra strap sliding off her shoulder (here he goes even further with one sliding and the other
breaking under the strain of the load it's supporting!) which was still fairly suggestive at the time,
although not for long as the bare bosom was starting to be featured by Playboy and others.
