The last George Morrice Humorama cartoon we discovered (one other Morrice spanking cartoon is known and will be posted in the future but is not Humorama) has a nautical theme somthing like Spanking Breeze #1 and Spanking Breeze #2, but this time a larger ship is involved, one ostensibly having embarked on a "whaling" expedition (a truly unpleasant idea). This of course allows the gag to be based around the double-meaning of the word "whaling": a "whaling expedition" instead of a "spanking breeze". We're not aware of any other spanking cartoons that employed the "whaling" gag, but it was used in Corey Ford's humorous pseudo-autobiography Salt Water Taffy (we have the spanking photo illustration from the book and will post it eventually). Morrice outfits his captain with the traditional "Chin Curtain" beard, merchant marine service ribbons, and a big grin as he "whales" away on the spankee, who is pretty and perturbed as most Morrice spankees are. The OTK positioning is a variant (feet not parallel) but fairly good with the spankee being turned over the captain's left leg. It's not really believable that she could be balanced that way for long, but it turns her bottom up nicely yielding a tempting target. This is one of Morrice's better efforts and a very nice example of a spanking cartoon. Ship's discipline must be maintained, after all. Just as with our preceding entry, there is a mystery about this cartoon's publication dates. The version seen here, from the March 1959 issue of Comedy, is the only one known and was almost certainly the cartoon's first appearance. Was it ever reprinted? It easily could have been as Humorama's reprint period lasted for 20 years, from 1961 to 1981, and we have certainly not seen every Humorama digest and magazine from that era (most of their content was reprinted, but not all, and some new spanking cartoons did make their debut). We'll keep our eyes open and hope to clear up this mystery eventually. |
