#13 - Wenzel Tight Dress Spanking

We're going to get back to more of the Bill Wenzel cartoons we scanned from Mike's collection next week, but right now we want to present this one posted by hugob00m on the CSR Forum. Here are b00m's observations:

"The positioning is terrible! It looks like the woman is about to slide off the man's lap and fall on her face! However, the shading more than makes up for this cartoon's faults. Again, with just a few well-placed penstrokes and some masterful application of an ink-wash, he's made the dress look like it's made of some kind of shiny gossamer fabric with nothing but skin underneath."

We'll expand upon what b00m said by noting that Wenzel shares both some of Bill Ward's virtues and his vices; namely, they both draw tight-fitting dresses very well (which can only be fully appreciated with a good scan), but also both frequently have trouble with the OTK position. Wenzel probably never gave any spankings himself, which could explain his ineptitude in this regard, but it's hard to believe that Ward never did given the incredible number of spanking cartoons he produced over what must have been at least a thirty-year period.

In addition to the defects that b00m pointed out, we will add the annoying but common mistake of having the spanker use the wrong hand. On the plus side, though, the spanker is otherwise well-positioned and the spankee's bottom looks good even though she's too far forward and about to slide off his lap.

12/16/2011 Update: We have two more versions of this to add to b00m's now. First is this one we scanned from the November 1968 issue of Popular Jokes. Although it must be at least the second printing of the cartoon, the caption is probably the same as the one used the first time: "Miss Delroy, seeing as I'm the owner of this business and you're my employee, let's just call this capitalist punishment!"

And thanks to this version of the original art which our file notes credit to Fantagraphics (although it didn't make it into their collection The Pin-Up Art of Bill Wenzel), we know that the editor took Wenzel's gag "Let's just call this capitalist punishment!" and added an introductory clause to it. We can also see that this was yet another example of the time-honored tradition of Secretary Spanking, but we're not going to change the title of this page to reflect that because we unwisely incorporated a non-Humorama cartoon into our Secretary Spanking numbering, meaning that until now there has been one less Humorama Secretary Spanking than the numbering would indicate, and this one restores the balance, i.e. "Secretary Spanking N" now means there are N Humorama secretaries getting the OTK treatment. Got all that?
